Harmony Day 2010 will arrive early on TV screens across Australia in a community service announcement, the Parliamentary Secretary for Multicultural Affairs and Settlement Services, Laurie Ferguson, said today.
'Harmony Day on March 21 celebrates the cohesive and inclusive nature of our nation and promotes the benefits of cultural diversity,' Mr Ferguson said.
'It's about community participation, inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.
'The Harmony Day TV commercial celebrates these ideals and captures the spirit of the younger generation of Australians.
'About 70 people from different cultural backgrounds and generations came together to film the commercial, encapsulating one of Harmony Day's key messages, 'everyone belongs'.
'Among the 20 countries represented by participants were Malaysia, China, Indonesia, Turkey, Spain, Ireland, Chile, Tonga, Kazakhstan and Lebanon.
'The Harmony Day 2010 theme is 'Express Yourself' – children took this up with great enthusiasm, painting canvases, themselves and each other.
'Seeing such a mixture of cultures and ages having fun and getting along is a great reminder of what Harmony Day is all about.
'Since Harmony Day began in 1999, thousands of schools, community groups and organisations have hosted celebrations.
'I encourage all Australians to start planning Harmony Day 2010 events and to register them at www.harmony.gov.au.
'People can also request some of the one million free Harmony Day promotional products such as balloons and badges at the same site.'
The Harmony Day community service announcements – 15– and 30–second commercials – will be broadcast nationally on free-to-air and pay TV channels from early March, and will also be available along with supplementary material on the Department of Immigration and Citizenship's (DIAC) YouTube channel, ImmiTV.
