In 2008 - 08, 224,619 people permanently moved to Australia. This was a 9.1% rise over the previous 12 month period, showing an almost continuous year on year rise.
182 people entered Australia under the title of having a ‘Distinguished Talent’. According to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship, this is for “people who are internationally recognized for exceptional and outstanding achievement in a profession, the arts, sport or research or academia.”
In respect of age, more women aged between 25 and 34 moved to Australia than any other age or sex, with 36,947.
The United Kingdom has appeared in the top 2 countries in which immigrants arrive from since 1978.
